At The School Child, our mission is to ensure that every child, irrespective of their socio-economic background, has access to quality education. Through sponsorship programs, mentorship, and community initiatives, we provide financial and material support to underprivileged children, helping them stay in school and achieve their dreams.
Our programs are designed to support all children in need; however, special emphasis is placed on empowering the girl child. Educating girls is pivotal in addressing societal challenges such as forced marriages, illiteracy, and unwanted pregnancies among teenagers. In Cameroon, 31% of girls are married before their 18th birthday, with 10.7% married before age 15. Additionally, 8% of adolescent girls give birth before the age of 16, contributing to high maternal mortality rates among pregnant teens.
By focusing on the education of the girl child, we aim to break these cycles, reduce vulnerabilities, and foster a society where every child has an opportunity to succeed. Our commitment is to bridge the education gap by supporting children in need, covering tuition, books, and essential learning resources. Together, we can create a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Spending the long holidays June-August with my late maternal grandmother mama Anna Tcheche, she
used to send me go take care of some old people in the morning. When we wake up in the morning
after morning devotion she will heat food. Send me to Lysoka town to 3-4 old people help them sweep
and fetch water before we went to the farm. I developed an attitude to help those in need. This was
done for 5 years for a 3 month period that I spend holidays with her.
My father gave me the opportunity of going to school and my 2 sisters. Early marriage wasn’t an option.
I remember very fondly when my paternal grandmother came visiting in august 1985 then I had passed
to form 1.I overheard their conversation. She came to asked for money. My father said he didn’t have
and was preparing for school reopening in September. His mum was furious saying I am big enough to
go on marriage. My father could not stand that. He complained to my mum in disbelieve. Despite that I
started school in September 1985 from day 1 with all my books as well as my 2 sisters.
When I completed my university studies I decided to work with rural women cultivate and process
cassava to garri by creating a co-operative in 2001. I worked in these rural communities for 18 years
where I found very young girls become mothers. High rate of school dropouts, mainly girls who were
forced to early marriage, the boys left for the nearby town to fend for themselves, high rate teenage
pregnancies. Very few parents could maintain their kids in primary and secondary schools. Boys were
given the privilege of going to school. The schools in villages have few teachers.
I thought of how I could help. In 2021/2022 academic year I started assisting children esp the girl
child go to school The School Child NGO was borne to assist children in rural areas dream big.
